I stopped skiing as a teenager for the same reason. All my friends loved skiing. We'd go after school till the evening at 10pm when we'd take the last bus back in to town. I was about 16 or 17 the last time I went. I couldn't close the ski boots. Yet, I was a top athlete, playing handball, basketball, football/soccer etc.

This is so familiar.

I have spoken with hundreds of women with lipedema, and many describe the same contrast. Very athletic and active, yet limited in specific, frustrating ways. I relate to this too. I worked at a gym for eight years, loved training, and ran half marathons, but heavy legs and that disproportionate lactic acid feeling were always a problem.

Looking back, I think a lot of it was about reduced oxygenation and pressure in the tissue affecting circulation, not fitness or effort. It has improved somewhat after surgery, which has been very telling.

Your ski boot story says it all. Top athlete, yet the body simply would not cooperate.
