We Need to Talk About What Lipedema Tissue Looks Like Under the Microscope
A study on adipocyte hypertrophy, fibrosis and immune cells shows that lipedema is not just “fat that will not go away”.
When lipedema tissue tells a different story
For many women with lipedema, one of the hardest parts is being told that their body is simply a matter of weight, willpower or lifestyle. But when researchers look at lipedema tissue under the microscope, a different picture begins to appear. This study gives us one of those important glimpses. It suggests that lipedema affected tissue is not only larger. It may also be structurally different, more fibrotic, and immunologically active in ways that do not look exactly like ordinary obesity. That does not answer every question about lipedema, but it does help move the conversation away from blame and toward biology.
