A science-based learning space for understanding lipedema.
Subscribe to gain full access to The Science of Lipedema — an educational platform offering structured, research-based learning about lipedema, published in both Norwegian and English.
The founder, Carina, discovered she had lipedema in January 2012 after years of unexplained pain. Throughout her early twenties, she visited several doctors trying to understand the cause of the pain in her legs. At that time, there were no communities or learning resources for lipedema patients in Norway, and it took years before she even met another woman with the same condition.
Between September 2021 and the following year, Carina underwent four lipedema-reducing surgeries. Her surgeon encouraged her to use her scientific background to help others deepen their understanding of the condition.
Carina holds a bachelor’s degree in human nutrition and a master’s degree in food science. She has published scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and worked in several scientific and industry roles—including as a laboratory manager studying inflammatory responses in human cells, and as a quality manager in food production. Today, she works as an IT project manager while developing and teaching through this platform as her true passion.
Over the years, she has explored different ways of sharing lipedema science—and found that Substack provides the ideal space for learning. Here, learners can access evidence-based knowledge, reflect on personal experiences, and develop a deeper understanding together. Every article includes references to its scientific sources, allowing you to study further on your own.
You can take these lessons with you wherever you go—on your way to work, during lunch, or while putting your kids to bed—since everything is easily accessible through the Substack app. Download the app to read, learn, and engage whenever it suits you.
Scientific Expertise of the LipedemaScience Founder
Published in Foods (2024); genetic research on bacteria in food using advanced DNA methods (whole-genome sequencing).
Published in Norsk Tidsskrift for Ernæring (2017); on genetically modified rice enriched with β-carotene in developing countries.
Conducted research on intestinal cells for the FoodProFuture project, testing the immune response and intestinal uptake of pea peptides (protein fragments) in an in vitro gut-cell model.
Served on the Editorial and Review Boards of the Student Journal of Life Sciences, ensuring scientific quality and mentoring authors.
Laboratory Manager in the Norwegian food industry, responsible for daily lab operations and food-quality control.
Holds a Master’s degree in Food Science from NMBU and a Bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition from Kristiania University College, including university courses in Molecular Biology (both theoretical and laboratory), Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Pathology, Anatomy and Physiology, as well as Theory of Science, Research Methods, and Statistics.
Founder of LipedemaScience, a platform dedicated to communicating scientific research on lipedema.
A Learning Experience
When you subscribe, you join an educational space designed to help you learn about lipedema through science, explained in a structured, accessible way. The focus here is on knowledge-building, understanding mechanisms, and making complex research meaningful in everyday life.
All lessons are developed with a clear pedagogical approach — transforming academic literature into learning resources that support deeper insight.
Research-Based Learning You Can Trust
Every article is grounded in peer-reviewed science and includes complete references, so you can explore the material further if you want to. Nothing is simplified without transparency; the goal is to help you strengthen your understanding, not just skim the surface.
You will find:
guided explanations of scientific concepts
thematic learning series
interpretation of research findings
quizzes and other learning activities
structured insights that help you see patterns and connections
