Why do you need to take care of your overall health when you have lipedema?
Because lipedema does not exist in isolation. It affects adipose tissue, but the symptoms you experience are influenced by the condition of the whole body.
Pain, swelling, heaviness and tissue sensitivity can vary considerably even when the amount of lipedema tissue has not changed. That tells us that symptoms are shaped by more than fat mass alone. Hormonal changes, sleep, stress, physical activity, metabolic health, inflammation, circulation, lymphatic function and other health conditions can all influence how the body feels and responds.
Caring for your overall health therefore matters for several reasons:
Your inflammatory environment matters. Lipedema tissue shows changes involving adipocytes, immune signalling, blood vessels and extracellular matrix. Conditions elsewhere in the body that increase systemic inflammatory signalling may affect how symptomatic you feel.
The nervous system influences pain. Stress does not mean lipedema is psychological. But the nervous system can amplify or dampen pain signals, and prolonged stress can influence immune, hormonal and metabolic processes.
Muscle and movement support function. Maintaining muscle strength, cardiovascular fitness and mobility can make everyday movement easier and support long-term metabolic and vascular health.
Metabolic health still matters. Having lipedema does not protect someone from insulin resistance, obesity, cardiovascular disease or other metabolic conditions. Improving those factors may benefit health even if some lipedema tissue remains disproportionately distributed.
Sleep affects almost everything. Poor sleep changes appetite regulation, pain sensitivity, glucose metabolism, stress hormones and immune signalling.
Hormones can influence symptoms. Many women describe symptom changes around puberty, pregnancy, the menstrual cycle or menopause, although the mechanisms are still being investigated.
Nutrition supports the whole system. Food is not a cure for lipedema, but adequate energy, protein, micronutrients, fibre and an overall nutritious dietary pattern support muscle, immune function, metabolic health and recovery.
Your body is dynamic. The same person may tolerate heat, exercise, certain foods, long periods of standing or hormonal changes differently from one month to another. The surrounding physiological state matters.
This is also why I think it can be limiting to ask only, “How do I treat my lipedema?” A broader question is often more useful:
“How can I make the rest of my body as healthy, resilient and well-functioning as possible while living with lipedema?”
That does not mean blaming yourself for symptoms, and it does not mean that lifestyle can eliminate lipedema. It means recognising that the affected tissue is part of a much larger biological system. Supporting that system can improve health, function and potentially symptom burden, even when the underlying predisposition remains.

Hi Carina, I know you’re still young but I wondered how you feel about HRT for post menopausal women with Lipedema. I have sleep issues and they seem to improve if I am on hormone replacement therapy patches.
