Did you know that simply eating a meal can trigger an inflammatory response in your body?

It might sound surprising, considering how much attention we give to anti-inflammatory diets, foods that supposedly cause inflammation, and supplements promising to reduce it. We have become so accustomed to associating inflammation with disease that the word itself has acquired an almost exclusively negative meaning. Yet inflammation is also one of the fundamental processes that allow our bodies to protect themselves, recover from injuries, and maintain normal physiological function.

Inflammation is essential for wound healing. Without an appropriate inflammatory response, your body would struggle to clear damaged tissue and repair injuries.

Imagine accidentally cutting your finger while preparing dinner. Within minutes, your body begins responding to the injury. Blood vessels dilate, their permeability increases, and immune cells are recruited to the damaged tissue, where they help remove microorganisms and cellular debris while coordinating the early stages of repair. The redness, warmth, swelling, and tenderness that may develop are familiar signs of acute inflammation. Although these symptoms can be uncomfortable, the underlying response is essential for healing. Without appropriate inflammatory activity, even relatively minor wounds would become considerably more difficult to repair.
